Substance Abuse Among Youth

Early drug abuse corelates with substance abuse problems later in life, and the most significant increases in destructive behavior appear to take place among older teens and young adults.

Marijuana Abuse

Marijuana is one of the most commonly used illicit substances among youth.

  • 5.1% of 12th graders use marijuana daily.
  • 34.4% of 12th graders have tried marijuana in their lifetime.
  • 25.8% of 12th graders consumed marijuana in the last year.
  • 3.2% of 12th graders used synthetic marijuana, also known as K2 or Spice, in 2022.
  • 68.2% of 12th graders who used marijuana in the last year consumed marijuana via vaping.
  • 12th graders are nearly 2.4 times more likely to use marijuana in their lifetime than they are to smoke a cigarette.

Opioid Abuse

Opioid abuse is considered a national public health emergency.

  • The rate of opioid overdose deaths in individuals aged 15 to 24 years old increased 700.0% from 1999 to 2022.
  • The percentage of overdose deaths involving fentanyl in 15- to 24-year-olds rose from 2.7% in 2018 to 80.8% in 2023.
  • High school students who legitimately use prescription opioids are 33% more likely to misuse opioids after high school.
  • 1.6% of 12th graders have abused narcotics other than heroin at least once.
  • 0.4% of 12th graders have abused heroin.
  • In the past year, 1.1% of 12th graders abused OxyContin while 0.7% abused Vicodin.

Stimulant Abuse

Youth are more likely to abuse prescription stimulants than they are to abuse cocaine or amphetamines.

  • 0.2% of 12- to 17-year-olds report using cocaine in the last year.
  • 4.5% of 8th graders have tried amphetamines in their lifetime.
  • 0.4% of 8th graders have tried methamphetamine.
  • 8th graders in 2024 are 49.4% less likely than 2020’s 8th graders to have tried amphetamines.
  • 0.8% of 12th graders have used crack cocaine at least once.
  • In the past year, 2.5% of 12th graders have used Adderall while 2.3% have used amphetamines.
  • Over the same 12-month period, 1.1% of 12th graders have used Ritalin while 0.5% used methamphetamine.

Alcohol and marijuana are the substances most commonly used among youth; note that data regarding less popular drugs may be limited.
